Have plans on getting professional laser teeth whitening? Here are important notes to prepare you for professional laser teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening is a generally safe cosmetic procedure if done by a dentist. And not everyone is a good candidate for teeth whitening.
Initially, we will want you to get a consultation and we may or may not require you to get dental x-rays. We will check for dental decay, existing dental fillings, tooth infections, and gum infections. Although these things may not necessarily mean that you are not a candidate for teeth whitening, we may suggest to you that you treat these hindrances first and set you up for expectations you may have once you get your teeth whitening.
If all is clear already and a go signal for teeth whitening is underway, we will explain to you the procedure. Professional laser teeth whitening isn't totally a painless procedure, depending on your pain tolerance, teeth whitening can be uncomfortable. We do not suggest you get anaesthetized for this procedure, because we don't want to damage your teeth. We want to be able to monitor if we have to cut your whitening short because if it's too painful already, it means it's going to be unhealthy for your teeth already and we may have to defer your treatment to some other time when your teeth have stabilized already. But in this day and age, teeth whitening solutions have improved and 90% of our patients can finish the entire procedure with little to no pain at all.
A professional laser teeth whitening procedure is a customized procedure or is not usually the same per patient. Some patients who drink coffee a lot may require more cycles or additional chemicals during the procedure to penetrate really yellowed teeth.
Teeth whitening is done in batches or what we call cycles, and depending on your tolerance and need, we can do 4 cycles per year. You may opt to do it all in one appointment or on different days within a year.
After teeth whitening, we will be explaining to you your maintenance, which is usually, Oral Prophylaxis and Fluoride treatment, or touch-ups every 6 months or once a year, depending on your habits.
We will require you to do modifications to your habits like drinking coffee or other coloured beverages through a straw to avoid hitting your teeth and yellowing teeth easily. Or a teeth whitening or for-sensitive-teeth toothpaste as your maintenance depending on how you reacted to the procedure.
So, good luck on your professional laser teeth whitening journey. :)
